A proud family business since 1956

D.R. (Jack) Gray started his painting business in Hāwera, Taranaki in 1956 after moving to NZ from Derbyshire, UK. Jack was an astute businessman and skilled painter, recognising that a work guarantee (rare in those days) would put his business in a strong position. With the high level of workmanship, quality service and professional standards he adhered to, the company rapidly built a solid reputation, and has remained strong and competitive for over 60 years.

Jack’s son took over the business in 1970, gradually growing it until the time his son Nathan took charge eight years ago in 2015. In 2022 Nathan made the bold move to rebrand the family business to Gray’s Painting Contractors – keeping the family business name alive but moving with the times.

A strong work ethic has always been in the family, as well as the attention to detail and professionalism they’ve become known for. Grays Painting Contractors are now a team of over 50 qualified and passionate tradespersons and apprentices, servicing the residential, commercial, and industrial painting, coating, and finishing application needs of their clients.

Nathan continually invests in the business, his growing and talented team and the region with various sponsorships; and strives to maintain strong and valued long-term relationships with clients for generations to come.
